Censorship and Freedom
Freedom is an idea that has captivated the minds of men since the inception of consciousness and reason. Yet this idea to some. In our contemporary society we are bombarded with censors, lies, propaganda, all designed to target the one aspect of the human mind that inhibits freedom: fear. We live comfortably in silence, sitting in front of the TV, contemplating the next day. We contemplate waking up, having a nice cup of coffee, and tackle the day working for a job to support us and our families. Little do we know that we have been indoctrinated to believe that there is nothing wrong with the world, told that their desires, urges and needs are repressed, and we live in ordained ignorance as we serve a machine that strips individuals of purpose, creativity, and dignity.
This is the model of the world we live in. We live in a world where we excel passed others only by trampling them, as we facilitate an "us-or-them" mentality, treating our fellow human beings as nothing more than competition or means to an end. Then, we watch our favorite politicians tell us they fight for our freedoms, that we have a right to equality and all they ask for in return is our silent obedience. Then they lie through their teeth and we sit and complain as we watch helplessly as our leaders that we entrusted the responsibility of our freedoms too lead us into an undesirable war as a brilliant attempt to impose more policies and censors too obscure the simple and obvious truth: that we are slaves and we gave them the keys to our chains.
The media, which is supposed to expose our oppressors instead have assumed the role as our chief oppressors. If knowledge were like oxygen, then our only emergency oxygen mask has betrayed us and we're silently suffocating while the media tells us we're okay. This is not freedom. This is not the liberties the forefathers of this country dreamed of. This is fascism. The freedom only belongs to those who rose above our society. They belong to the 1% of the population of the world. They have ripped it from our clutches and claimed it for themselves and blackmail us to act as slaves if we ever want those freedoms, but unfortunately this is an empty promise. We are being extorted and we not it. We just gave up the fight.
I've witnessed the meaning of powerful words being changed. I've witnessed the meanings "Democracy" and "Freedom" turn into "Christo-fascism" and "social opression". But what happens that causes these things to trespass in our lives unnoticed and unquestioned? What is the source onerous ignorance? Normality. Normality is our ultimate oppressor, and my sworn enemy. It is the very thing, I hope to see destroyed.
The Failure of Normality
Normality is the foolishness that governs our Western mentality. It's the ultimate oppressor of dignity. But what is this abomination? To quote Stephen Faller, "It's mediocrity placed in the lofty plain of ideal." It's when mediocrity in all forms of human expression sets the bar, and passing it is considered risky and dangerous because, in the eyes of the enslaved Layman, it posits the idea in their minds that you're better than them. So you're choice or taste in music is oppressed because it's considered foolish and "offensive" to them because they lack the integrity and the strength to endure the scrutiny of the others.
Take the issue of gay marriage for example. I will address this serious matter more promptly in the near future, but to abridge the issue, homosexuality is considered "abnormal". It goes against the standard established by the onerous dogma of the fundamentalist Judeo-Christian church, which run the country. It seems to be an essential component to the political ideology of the Conservative party today. Propagandists and opinion-point journalists such as the infamous Bill O'Reilly see it as a moderating influence. While in someways, I do agree that spirituality can in some cases ground an individual, the Judeo-Christian philosophy has pushed people to violence against those who oppose it, and deem them bigots and intolerant, even as they force their opponents to commit suicide. They claim homosexuality to be a choice. Why would a homosexual choose to be homosexual in this society? Why would anyone want to be mentally tortured, live in sexual repression, and ridicule for being different? I've witnessed heartbreaking testimonies of homosexuals crying to their parents, begging them to understand, or worse, apologizing to the people they love for not being what they wanted.
How heartbreaking is it to apologize for being who you are? My heart goes out to those who committed suicide out of humiliation and shame. That's not freedom. That's bigotry. That's true intolerance. That's the worst form of intolerance there is. This angers me greatly. Even if homosexuality were a choice, and I by no means imply that it is, they shouldn't have to apologize for it. They have the right to love who ever they choose to love. It is not the business of anyone but them and their lovers. Anyone else is secondary and irrelevant. Yet, I've seen people try to force people to live an appropriate life that the world could accept. I've seen Politicians sell-out their dignity in support of the status quo. Yes, they'd give anything to preserve the status quo. It's their lifeline. "Abominations" like homosexuality are not fit for this so-called perfect society. The irony is almost to much to bare.
What of polygamy? It is rejected for the same reason gay marriage is, that is, that marriage is apparently between one man and one woman. Ergo, the institution of marriage, sanctified by religion, is not between two people who genuinely love each other, but rather two people to form a social bond and attempt to love each other. Religion's dominion over this particular subject, namely Abrahamic religions, should, in my opinion, be abolished. The only thing man should be intolerant of is intolerance itself. Oppression should be fought against. These things oppress the individual; these things are normality itself. All social issues stem from this vial stigma of the collective conservative and liberal ideology. I believe in freedom for all. I believe that the freedom of the individual is paramount to truly lasting peace. But what is freedom? What are it's limits?

True face of Freedom
Freedom is a misunderstood idea. The opposing arguments are usually through sheer ignorance and condemnation only because they take the face value of the idea rather than digging down to the core foundations of the idea. Freedom is metaphysical idea. It is often understood as unrestrained choice, as in, the infinite power of choice to do as one pleases, ignoring the respect of others freedoms, and walking all over minorities. The mortal stigma of this idea is because those in power have been freed from social predicaments but fear so much for it, that they'll oppress others simply to maintain that freedom. But the power of freedom is not so simple. It's both metaphysical and transcendental; the only thing which can restrain it is one's own self.
But as Stephen Faller once postulated, "True freedom is not having the infinite power of choice; it's making a choice for all of infinity." Freedom is the ability do as one pleases, to lead the life one chooses too, and love whoever and however many one chooses too. The only condition is that these facets are between mutual consenting individuals. If one chooses to engage in a polygamous relationship, all members should be aware of the dynamics of the relationship, and all must contribute equally to the relationship. This can extend to how one lives in society. Everyone should live the life they choose too as long as they do not oppress or curtain another person's freedom. They should exist as individual entities, while having respect and regards to other individuals. If this regard limits the choices an individual can make, that is acceptable, as long as a choice still exists. These restrictions should be self imposed, and not imposed by any external forces.
In less abstract terms, one can do as one chooses as long as it doesn't forcefully or intentionally obstruct another individual's freedom for the sake of one's ideal. This reconciliation between Individual and Society is necessary. In a truly free society, every individual is accounted for, but every individual still contributes back the community around the individual. There must be a yielding and returning of the support and contributions of the individual to society. When the individual provides a contribution, the contribution must be returned, and the process repeats. I will speak more precisely on this issue in a later post about my political ideology: Anarchism.
